A proven design gets a new twist with the Trail-a-Bike Tandem. The Tandem is based on the original Trail-a-Bike, which attaches to the rear of your bike to let you safely bring along a child. The Tandem adds a twist, however, by offering two seats, so you can bring twice the number of kids for twice the fun. There's no better or safer way to bring your kids on a lazy ride around the neighborhood or beach town.
The Tandem is equipped with an easy-to-use seven-speed Shimano drivetrain, which makes it easier to handle hills and valleys. The seats' low riding positions, meanwhile, keep your children's center of gravity closer to the ground for added stability. The Tandem is also widely compatible, with a patented design that fits most 26-inch and 700c lead bikes, along with a sturdy steel hitch with four shim options that works with almost any seat post. And once you arrive at your destination, the frame folds up for easy storage and transport. The Tandem even fits in a car trunk.
Other features include an adjustable stoker stem to fit a wider range of kids, a bash guard to protect the chain ring, and a safety flag. Designed for kids between the ages of 4 to 6, the Tandem supports up to 125 pounds and weighs 34 pounds by itself.
About Adams
Adams opened in 1986 on a single idea: Create great products that make riding a bicycle easier and more fun for the whole family. The idea spawned the Adams Trail-a-Bike, a name now synonymous with an entire category of bicycles. The Trail-a-Bike took off soon after, providing an easy way to get kids involved in cycling and a safe way to introduce proper riding and traffic habits. After more than 20 years, the line has evolved to include six Trail-a-Bike models, a plethora of accessories and add-ons, and the Runner, now considered one of the best ways to introduce young children to bicycles.

Look at the picture and realize that what you see is what you will get. First of all, the instructions are rudimentary and general to all trail-a-bikes and include nothing specific to the tandem, eg. rear handlebars. Now to the design issues. Notice the position of the first set of pedals - low - that's because on a regularly sized bike they will ride low enough to strike the pavement on occasion. This scared the kids and busted the reflectors on the sides of the pedals the first ride. Next notice that the front seat looks much higher than the rear. That is because the position of the rear handlebars depends on the front seat being raised high (along with them) so they will not be too low for the rear rider. Still my two granddaughters really liked the idea of riding together so I adjusted for these issues by doing the following: I raised the back seat on my bike (I do sit high now) and used one of the extra shims used to... As an avid cyclist I realized you can't have much of a ride when you go out with young kids. You'll end up going a mile or two at most. You will get ZERO exercise yourself. Those kiddy trailers are only suitable babies. Older kids are bored in them and pulling two passengers is hard. The Adams tandem is the ultimate solution ! This thing has its own gears. The kids actually ride it; they don't just passively sit there. If you're going up a hill they must pedal if you're going to make it up. We occasionally did 30 or 40 mile rides. Back then they didn't fold so I used a Yakima Anklebiter rack (which will hold ANY bike that has a crank). In the years we rode it the kids learned the rules of the road. When called "Crossing" they knew to stop pedalling, etc. My son (older and taller) had the front position and the shifter -- my daughter, in the rear, had the bell. If you've not been on a long tandem... After getting used to the new balance considerations, it's very stable and safe. |
